History: The breed was first documented in the United States in the 1960s, although evidence of the same short legged characteristics have been known in many other areas like Russia and Germany. It was not systematically bred until 1980's where the original stock was developed in Louisiana
Characteristics: Small to medium in size, the most distinctive characteristic of this breed is the noticeably short legs. Often the hind legs will be longer than the front legs. They can have either short or long hair with a thick body type much like the Persian. The main trait, the shortened legs, is not a constant with the breed. In many cases there will be long legged siblings in the same litter with ones that have the short leg trait. These are considered a non-standard Munchkins, they still make excellent pets.
Temperament: High spirited and confident. Sweet tempered, playful, intelligent. A people oriented feline which seems to enjoy being handled and love to run, their short legs do not ever seem to be a handicap. They get along well with children, dogs and other cats. They are an excellent personality that makes a welcome addition to most homes.
