History: LaPerm cats are a new addition to the cat world. It is a Rex breed that was identified in a female from a litter of otherwise normal kittens in 1982. The mother of the breed was a working farm cat and only by accident was she identified as carrying a unique genetic trait. The gene that provided the very soft and curly fur has been identified as unique and not related to any other rex varieties. The mother and her first litter of five males which all exhibited the same coat were allowed to freely associate with others on the farm and developed quite a colony of these special cats. Some were brought to a cat show where the judges, breeders and exhibitors all agreed that this was something unique. From that point the breed has developed into a recognized championship breed on its own.
Characteristics: The LaPerm is a lean and muscular cat with no exaggerated features of note. Its origins are from a farmcat, Large and cupped ears. Curly or wavy hair is the unique feature of this breed. The actual way this is manifested is quite varied, it can be in tight ringlets or only a wavy coat.
Temperament: Gentle and affectionate. Inquisitive and curious, they will always try to be in the center of the action. Their farm origin gives most the inclination to hunt. Intelligent and active
Requirements: They adapt quite easily to life on the farm, single family dwelling or apartment. They readily adapt to other pets in the home and enjoy children. Low maintenance fur makes this a great pet for a busy family, they need only to be bathed and towel dried, hair dryers often cause the cat's fur to frizz rather than retain its curly appearance.
