Koi
Carp, which include koi are a large family of cool water fishes often kept in water features and pools.Koi have also had some genetic manipulation done as they have also been kept for a long time in many Asian cultures. The concentration has been more on the way the fish are patterned and coloured rather than trying to manipulate the actual body shape of the the fish.
As a result, these fish are much more suited to large bodies of water such as outdoor ponds and garden water features that do not inhibit these large fish from growing to full size in suitable water bodies.
These fish have become quite exotic, and they are highly prized in Japan and other places where keeping these magnificent fish is encouraged.
The main work done on the colouration patterns is creating pleasing patterns when viewed from above. Since the majority of their housing are ponds and other water bodies, rather than the typical indoor aquarium, no matter how large.
"Koi (English /ˈkɔɪ/, Japanese: [koꜜi]) or more specifically nishikigoi ([niɕi̥kiꜜɡo.i], literally "brocaded carp"), are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor ponds or water gardens.
There are a number of striking varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scale pstterning and shape. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.[2]"
Prize specimens can become very expensive, fetching the highest prices of any domestic or pet fish. They are very hardy when kept, during the spring and summer, in outdoor pools with enough capacity to allow them to move and grow unhindered.
Juveniles often grow quite a bit when allowed to live in spacious areas during a Montreal spring and summer. Come fall, though, it is important to bring them into a weather protected aquarium so they are not frozen.
Unless the pond is quite deep, well over 4 feet, it is not advisable to leave the fish in the pond during the winter.
