Ferret Care Guide

The Ferret Care Guide has been developed by Centre d'Animax NATURE Pet to aid new ferret owners with the vital information they require to keep their ferret healthy and well maintained.

LIFE EXPECTANCY:

6 - 10 years

GENERAL:

Ferrets need at least four hours a day of free exercise. They can squeeze through gaps 2" x 2" so block all spaces under appliances, heaters and furniture. Don't allow them to chew any spongy objects like erasers, foam pillows, sponges, Styrofoam or anything that could cause an obstruction if swallowed. Beware of bathtubs and any other opened containers of liquid which pose drowning hazards. Ferrets can also open cabinets and drawers so make sure you secure them. Safe toys such as tubes, tunnels, cardboard boxes, rugged cat toys and balls will provide hours of fun. Like a cat, ferrets require their claws to be trimmed every 2 - 3 months.

HOUSING:

Choose a solid floored cage, as large as possible to provide a safe place when they are not enjoying free exercise in your home. Aquariums and wired-floored cages are not suitable for ferrets. Ferrets enjoy multi-level platforms, soft sleeping areas such as a small rug, hammocks or even an old sweatshirt. Add a litter box with a pellet type cat litter, not wood shavings and a heavy food bowl and a water bottle.

DIET:

Ferrets require a lot of fat and protein. They should be fed regular ferret food or kitten food that is meat based. Avoid foods containing mineral oil and large amounts of vegetable fillers. Dry food and fresh water should be provided daily. Dairy products and food rich in carbohydrates are hard for ferrets to digest do they should be avoided as well as honey, raisins or snacks containing sugar. Safe treats or snacks for ferrets are cooked meats, eggs, or freeze dried liver sold as cat or dog treats.

CLEANING:

Remove the soiled litter daily and change the bedding at least once a week. The litter box, food dish, water bottles and cage bottom all need weekly washing. You may use a specific cleaning soap made for cleaning cages or even some diluted dish soap with warm water. Always rinse and dry the cage well before returning your pet to it's cage.

We hope thie ferret Care Guide has given you the information you require to continue to enjoy your ferret for many years.
