Dwarf Cichlids

South American Dwarf Cichlids

These cichlids are normally quite small and often quite timid in a community aquarium. They are often very colourful and most species will breed if given the proper conditions.

Scientific Name
English Name
French Name
Microgeophagus alltispinosum
Bolivian Ram
Cichlidé de Bolivie

They prefer slightly acid water and plenty of plants and places to hide. Temperature should be fairly warm, around 78o F. They can be delicate, so do not try to add them to an aquarium that does not have a well matured biological filter already established.

There are quite a few species sold in the store, many are of the Papiliochromus varieties that include most of what is commonly referred to as the rams. Many are variations of the Papiliochromis ramirezi commonly known the German Rams which have been spawned into a number of different variations such as the various Balloon rams, Long-finned rams, stunning Electric Blue and even the gold rams.

Another set of dwarfs are from the Apistogramma family. These are usually much more elongated and thinner from top to bottom and offer a stunning variety of colours, mostly in the reds and yellows. These include Apistogramma agassizi, Apistogramma macmasteri and Apistogramma cacatoides; among others. You never know what new and stunning variation may suddenly appear for sale, but our expert buyers are always on the look-out for new and interesting types of South American dwarf cichlids as they become available.
