Danios are a very popular fish for many home community aquariums, their fast swimming and flashes of colour make them an interesting fish to watch doing their rounds.
They usually stay in the upper levels of the aquarium. There are quite a number of danios strains available for the fish keeping hobbyist.
They come from the fresh water areas throughout South East Asia, usually from relatively strong flowing stream and rivers.
They have become quite popular because of the many various colour variations they offer. In most cases they are also quite hardy and are quite easily able to take the community aquarium environment with little stress.
Although they do range in size, most are quite small and will often be quite content with a 10 gallon passive community. Some, such as the giant danio (Devario aequipinatus) will prefer to be kept in a larger capacity aquarium as they age and grow to adulthood.
The most common species, the zebra danio (Danio rerio) are extremely popular. They are exceedingly hardy and are often a flashy fish to place into an aquarium that has just been installed.
They are often hardy enough to pass through the many stages needed to establish an effective biological filter. Their ability to weather the stresses of establishing a new aquarium system have made them a perennial favorite with many aquarists.
Although some exceptions can be found, Danios prefer to be kept in groups. Usually a school of at least five or more is the preferred way to add them to an aquarium.
They are quite active and swim constantly. Although they are rarely aggressive, they can cause problems for very timid fish with their speed and activity.
They will eat almost anything put in the aquarium. They most often have very strong appetites and are eager feeders. They normally do quite well with prepared staple flake foods and have few problems with maintaining strong health with them.
There are no glaring problems with the nutrients offered by standard prepared diets.
There are no special feeding requirements. As with most other fish species, though, they will also enjoy many of the freeze dried foods available at any of our six store locations.
They are often first to attack the regular feeding and are quite active feeders. If there are timid and poor feeders in the aquarium it is best to watch to ensure all of the fish in the tank have a chance to eat.
It has occurred occasionally that the danio school will eat everything provided quickly and lesser prepared species end up going without.
Since they swim constantly, and often come from freely flowing rivers and streams, danios, of every type are best kept in tanks with as long a run as possible.
The filtration should be strong enough to allow them to frequently swim against a current. It is not uncommon to see this behaviour from the fish if the output of the filter offers a strong enough current to do so.
