History: The first example of the Cornish Rex was identified in 1950 near Cornwall, England where a litter of 5 kittens to a tortoiseshell mother included a red and white kitten with a very distinctive and unusual curly coat. This kitten was named Kallibunker with the nickname Kalli. He was mated back to the mother on the advice of a local veterinarian and a second litter with another male was produced. This was the foundation of the breed which has been somewhat outbred to maintain the stability of the breed in later years. These stabilizing cats included Siamese, Russian Blues, American and British shorthairs to provide a strong genetic foundation. The breed has been successfully imported to the United States as well.
Characteristics:Cornish Rex sport a racy and very slender body that is well adapted to their athletic proclivities. There is a natural arch to their spine that matches to a tuck in the waist. with a long and tapering tail. Their ears are quite large and stick up attentively
Temperament: Enthusiastic and social, they enjoy being with the center of attention and finding themselves in the middle of everything. They are quite acrobatic and extremely intelligent.
Requirements:They do not like to be alone, and generally are best kept with a companion if the family is absent for long working hours. Their personality makes them most suited when there is normal and regular activity around them.
