Carp-Like Fish

Carp-Like FishThe carp-like fish comprise quite a wide and very diverse group of fish that encompass many of the popular cool water and tropical fish often found in the home aquarium.

The GoldFish and Koi are just a single component of this group and are quite popular for people who enjoy fish in the increasingly popular outdoor water features, pools and ponds. There are many aquarists who started out in the hobby with a small goldfish in a bowl.

When dealing with a new tropical fish community aquarium, some of the most popular and hardy fish that can be added are within the Danios group. As a group, they are normally very fast swimming fish that enjoy free flowing water and the resulting currents resulting from the outputs of strong filtration. The most popular danio is the zebra danio, which is often used as one of the fish that is used to begin the new aquarium and help mature the biological filtration. The zebra has evolved into quite a number of colour and fin variants.

Barbs are another very common beginning aquarium fish. They are usually somewhat more aggressive on the whole. They are so hardy, though, that they still have become extremely popular for many home aquariums. puntius-tetrazoni-tiger-barb-Barbus-de-Sumatra They are often the very first fish that a new aquarist may add to a freshly established aquarium set-up. Tiger barbs and rosy barbs are some of the most commonly kept tropical fish when starting out with a new aquarium.

There are quite a few other common barbs kept in the store tanks of Centre d’Animaux NATURE Pet.

They are best kept in larger schools (5 – 7 in an odd numbered group). This ensures that they are more focused on their own species rather than turning their tempers on other fish in the community.

Most of the rasbora species are small and are not as commonly kept as starting fish for a brand new aquarium. The most commonly seen is the Harlequin Rasbora (Trigonostigma (Rasbora) heteromorpha. It can only grow as large as an inch and three quarters when an adult.

The Harlequin Rasbora is well known to be a very popular and pretty passive fish for peaceful fish tanks. They do have enough speed and energy to escape from many dangerous situations.

They can be very good fish to choose as fish that are passive and get along well with their tank mates They are usually peaceful schooling fish and get along with most others that have the same temperament.

Another interesting set of fish that are presently included in the carp-like fishes are the various loaches. These are often included when there are discussions of bottom fish and algae eaters. But, they are part of this large category as well.

Loaches offer an intriguing variation to the tank. They often stay close to the substrate and scavenge for food as they search the bottom, often piece by piece.

Overall, the carp-like fish category offers a wide diversity of fish. Many of them are commonly seen in the aquariums of the six Centre d'Animaux NATURE Pet stores. Our well versed staff is always ready to provide the expertise needed to confidently add one of these into a new or established aquarium.
