  • History: The Boxer is a dog from mixed heritage that appears to include, among others, the Bulldog and Great Dane. They were originally bred to hunt and keep prey in place.

Later occupations now include use as guard dogs. They have become quite popular in North America since they were introduced. They are in the top ten most popular breeds in Canada.

  • Characteristics: The ideal individual has a square build with a broad nose with the characteristic pushed in muzzle. They are of medium size with a short, tight shiny coat.

They are a powerful athlete and combine strength with agility and grace. Their faces often seem to show a range of emotions

  • Temperament:These dogs tend to be very alert, energetic and playful. They are often great with families and truly enjoy being with children that they are familiar with.

They are very wary of strangers and make good guard dogs because of it. By nature they are neither aggressive or vicious. They are very loyal and intelligent, but can be quite stubborn when it comes to original training.

To help reduce the problem it is usually best to provide early obedience training.
