Betta Care Guide

THE SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH Betta Splendens

This Betta Care Guide is designed to help new Beta owners understand the proper care and maintenance of Betta splendens.

Wild Bettas live in many shallow water bodies in the rice fields of Thailand and surrounding areas. Because these rice paddies have very little oxygen for the fish to breath, evolution has provided them with special gills that allow them to breath in air at the surface of the water.

They are called a labyrinth fish. Store bought Bettas are usually bred for fancy colours. They are the best fish for bowls or small aquaria. Betta Colour Enhancing Flakes

When you bring your Betta home, initially use the water in the fish bag to set up the bowl. When adding more water to fill up the bowl or aquarium, make sure to condition the new water with "Aqua-Plus". DO not feed your fish today. ONLY start tomorrow.

The best place to put your Betta is a warm room like a kitchen. Room temperature should be at least 72o F (22o C). Do not put it in the window or near heaters where the water will overheat.

When feeding your Betta, use a small pinch of food every second day. They eat freeze dried blood worms, red grubs, frozen brine shrimp or NutraFin Betta Food.

Betta Starter Kit Depending on the size of your bowl or aquarium, most bowls need a partial water change every five to ten days. Never do a 100% water change no matter how dirty the bowl.

Pour or scoop out one half to two thirds of your bowl's water. Take the same amount of tap water at approximately the same temperature as in the bowl, add the proper amount of "Aqua-Plus", then pour your conditioned water back into the bowl.

NEVER USE SOAP to clean the bowl, decorations or gravel. Use only warm water and an algae scrub pad. Always remember to save some of the fishes' water when cleaning the bowl. The Betta could die from shock if you use 100% new water.

Centre D'Animaux NATURE Pet Centres carry everything you need for your Betta: Fish Net, fish bowls and desktop aquarium sets, gravel, "Aqua-Plus", Betta foods, Betta nets and decoration.

Should you have any questions regarding your Betta Siamese Fighting Fish, or any other information contained in this Betta Care Guide, come to any Centre D'Animaux NATURE Pet Centre and consult with your NATURE sales person. We are here to take care of you and your new pet.
