History:The American Bulldog was originally used to help control cattle in the old west. The breed was originally created in the 1700s where besides his herding chores was also used as both a guard and fighting dog as well. The original ancesters of the Bulldog were from four strains, the Scott, Johnson, Williamson an Baily breeds. Of these four, two are the main contributors to the features of present day American bulldogs. The Scott dogs were the smaller of the two. They had smaller muscle and bone mass, while the Johnson individuals were bigger, more heavily muscled and had a more mastiff-like head with the distinctive undersho bite. As time progressed the breed has intermingled the genes to the point where it is not easy to distinguish the two sets of forbears.
